tips chess champ strategies tactics

It is a dream of every chess player to become a champion at the game. As they rightly say, the journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. Although there are no tricks to become a champion overnight, here are some tips from Chessbolt that will help you take the first steps on your journey and become a chess champ.

1  Master the Fundamental Moves

In the game of chess, each piece can move only in a certain way. For example:

  • The Pawn moves straight ahead but can attack at an angle, one square at a time.
  • The Knight is known for its 'L' shaped moves.
  • The Bishop moves at an angle but may move more than one square at a time.
  • The Rook moves in a straight line but may move forward, back, or sideways for any number of squares.
  • The Queen, which is the most valuable and powerful piece, can move in any direction for any number of squares. However, the queen doesn't move in two directions in one move.
  • The King moves in any direction one square at a time.

2  Begin With A Pawn

Begin by moving the pawn in front of either the queen or the king two squares forward. This opens a pathway for your bishops and queen to enter the game.

3  Bring Out The Knights And Bishops

It is very essential to move knights and bishops towards the center of the board before you proceed to move your queen, king, or rook.

4  Be Vigilant

chess vigilant moves play blunders

Watch your back and front! Think for yourself. What are the plans of the opposition? Have a counter plan and consider all possibilities. Look at the opponent moves that would pose threats to your pieces. Don't make any moves that leave your pieces unprotected.

5  Be Wise In Using Moves

chess wise moves play weaknesses

Making too many moves with pawns must be avoided as that can lead to weaknesses and cannot be undone. Making too many queen moves in the opening can leave your minor pieces undeveloped. All the moves you make must improve your position, because even a single tempo in a chess game can put you at a disadvantage.

6  Early Castling

You should always look to move your king to safety early in the game. Once all the squares between the rook and the king are unoccupied, you can move the king two squares towards the rook while the rook can move to the square on the other side of the king. When your opponent neglects early castling, you can consider launching an attack on his king as seen in picture below:

7  Middle Game

The middle game usually begins after Castling. In the middle game, you are always on the lookout for ways to improve chess piece position and capture pieces of your opponent. Here, the focus is to look for unprotected chess pieces of the opponent and think about ways to move your pieces into position to attack the enemy king.

8  Precious Pieces

chess precious pieces protect defense attack undefended

You can't lose pieces just like that! You need to be vigilant. You will lose some of your pieces, and trade them for some of the opposition pieces. For more information on what pieces to trade, refer to our points table in blog post "5 Easy Steps to Evaluate a Chess Position".

So what does that tell you? Don't lose your bishop just to save a pawn. Get your priorities clear!

9  Don't Play Hastily

chess hasty play patient thinking mistakes blunders

Patient thinking is what makes you a winner in the game of chess. Figure out the best chess moves and try to visualize how they would turn out to be. Cautious decision-making and observing the situation of the game must be taken into account before making any hasty moves. Chances of making mistakes increase if you are playing too hastily, which in turn may make you lose the game. Chess teaches people why it is not important to make moves hastily.

10  Winning The Endgame

Chess endgame begins when you and your opponent swap many pieces and you are down to just a few pieces. At this stage, pawns and kings become more important. You should manage to advance a pawn to the farthest row away from you, so that pawn becomes a queen. Don't be afraid to advance your king as there are too few pieces on the board to not use your king.
